Foreclosure Crisis Leads to More Homeless Pets - The Dr Jane's HealthyPetNet Foundation to the Rescue!

Even though the ongoing housing crisis shows small signs of recovery, another crisis is growing to epidemic proportions. Countless dogs and cats have been, and are continuing to be abandoned by families driven out of their homes due to foreclosures. These devastating situations result in dire circumstances for pets, who are either left trapped inside a foreclosed home with little or no food and no one to provide medical attention, or are turned out onto the streets to fend for themselves.

Fortunately, when a group of real estate professionals in Scotsdale, Arizona, were faced with these heartbreaking situations, time-after time, they decided to do something about it. Together, they formed their own rescue group, aptly named Lost Our Home Pet Foundation. And, thanks to their continuing efforts, many companion animals abandoned in Scotsdale and the Phoenix metropolitan area now have a new lease on life.

The LOHPF’s stated mission is to rescue, foster, heal, adopt-out and advocate on behalf of dogs or cats, who are the victims of foreclosures or evictions. This organization has developed four distinct ways to help pet parents in need.

- The Furry Friends Food Bank assists families struggling to afford the basic necessities to care for their pets. They provide food, litter and other more costly items required to help maintain their pets’ health. By providing this assistance early on, pet parents are less likely to abandon their pets.

- The Furry Friends Foster Program provides temporary homes for pets until their pet parents can locate a long-term residence.

- They operate an adoption program, placing abandoned pets in loving, forever homes.

- And, finally, their Pet Rescue Assistance program is truly remarkable. They have established a telephone line and email address, where people can contact them if they know of a pet in immediate danger.

It brings me abundant happiness to announce that the Dr. Jane’s HealthyPetNet Foundation has granted this worthy non-profit organization a financial award. The funds will help them to continue their much-needed work alleviating the suffering of Arizona’s abandoned pets.

The Lost Our Home Pet Foundation is a shining example of what pet people can do to address the needs of our companion animals in desperate need. We applaud their valiant work and we wish them continued success in their efforts to help people and their pets.

The Dr. Jane’s HealthyPetNet Foundation provides funding to deserving independent rescues that help alleviate the suffering of abandoned and abused companion animals. In 2009, we awarded financial aid to 13 different rescues. All of the selected organizations are superb examples of rescue groups, providing loving support to the wounded souls who have endured the unfortunate hardships of neglect and abuse. We’re absolutely committed to giving much needed help to these small rescues, as they achieve so much with so few resources.

    What a wonderful group of people with so many ways to help.  Sometimes, pet parents just need that helping hand of food to keep their pets.  This group has given back hope to people who really do want to keep their family pet.  And thank you Dr. Jane Foundation for recognizing them.

    I AM SO THANKFUL FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU,WE JUST ADOPTED A BEAUTIFUL DOG FROM TENNESSE @ WEEKS AGO AND HE IS GREAT. WE HAD A WHITE SHEPARD FOR OVER !) YRS TILL HE GOT STRUCKEN WITH CANCER.ALL THESE DOGS NEED IS SOMEONE TO LOVE THEM AND CARE FOR THEM,IF I COULD ID TAKE MORE IN,BUT YOU ARE SO GREAT ALONG WITH ALOT OF OTHER PLACES THAT DO HELP THEM
          KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

    I currently have 6 cats and 1 dog all of which have a place in my heart.  I love them all but it is becoming increasingly difficult to feed them and give them the necessary veterniary care as I am a senior citizen with limited income.  All of the cats are rescues from heartless neighbors and others who allow bad things to happen to these precious animals.  We need to make this world a better place for all these pets and punish people who mistreat animals.  We all need to get behind the Humane Society of the US and help to get better and  more effective laws passed for people who mistreat animals.  Thank you HealthyPetNet Foundation for your help in making this world a better place for all our pets.  The financial grants you give to worthy rescues in so heartwarming to read and learn about.

    Hi,

    I would like to see a refuge built in the middle west for rabbits and cats to start.  It w/add dogs as it grew.  The House Rabbit society/assoc told me to take my bunnies to a shelter to be killed if I couldn't find a home for them.  They have too many bunnies to even foster out.  

    I've watched the Maine coon rescue's emails for some time.  There are so many emails marked URGENT!  Owner passed, owner in hospital or assisted living, etc.  

    I suggest starting with comments and suggestions on a facebook page.  I have cancer and am unable to do much.  I need help with that.  Financing the project is to set it up so the person could make monthly payments toward taking care of the bunny or cat for the rest of their lives.  Another alternative, tho I have cancer, I was able to get 5,000 in whole life insurance for my 7 pets.  I have an agent, who can help people, who are sick, buy the insurance for about 33.00 per month.  In two years after I'm free of the illness, I can increase the amount of the policy.  Silent auctions, band concerts in the summer, etc.  It doesn't have to be a new building.  Get volunteers to refurbish a sturdy old building and remodel it.  

    I know it can be done.  When I'm well, I can do more to get it started.  Why sh/my little ones have to die just because I can no longer care for them.  I read petfinder's article on starting a shelter.  There is a lot of things to consider for housing animals 24/7, volunteer vets on call, an accountant for the money, finding a place close to areas of population where animals can be kept, and the list goes on and on.  It was a very well written article.  I don't think they missed a thing.  

    I'm not leaving dogs out of this refuge.  Bunnies are bought, found out they are high maintenance critters and tossed away.  The indoor rabbit cannot survive outside.  They are pets.  Bunnies and cats get along good together, most of the time.  I thought it w/be easy to start here.  Start small and build up.  Unless someone has a better suggestion and Millions and millions of $$$$.
