The Ruff Guide to Welcoming a New Puppy

new puppy treats

Training your new puppy can be a rewarding experience, and with the right treats, it can even be easy to get them to learn to sit and stay.

Bringing a new puppy home is the start of a new, exciting chapter in your life. Full of tail-wagging, belly rubs, and endless cuddles, this adventure will be sweet and fun. But on certain puppy-filled days, your home may feel like a battle against the odds with chewed-up shoes, messy pee pads, and a whole set of bedding to wash. When do you get to the happy ending of this chapter, where you’ve got a calm, normal dog?!

Needless to say, raising a puppy requires time, effort, and patience (imagine trying to bake a cake with a hyperactive Yorkie at your feet). But fear not, fellow pet parent. From potty training mishaps that'll make you question your choice to adopt, to mealtime fiascos that rival a toddler's picky eating habits - we've got you covered!

In this blog, we're here to provide you with a ‘ruff’ guide on what to expect with a new puppy. Through positive training techniques, the right foods, and lots of love, your puppy can grow into a healthy, well-behaved dog in spite of the occasional chaos. Let’s embrace the puppy madness together!

6 Paw-sitive Training Techniques

Training is a critical aspect of new puppy parenthood, and it's never too early to start (even as early as Day 1!). But be prepared for some trial and error as your pup learns the ropes. Here are six tips that will help you and your pup reach five-star, good boy or girl status - with some new party tricks to boot!

  1. Start with the basics. Begin with basic commands like "sit," "stay," "come," and "leave it." These commands will form the foundation of your training and help your puppy learn to follow your lead. Remember, you’re the leader of the pack!
  2. Use positive reinforcement. Who doesn’t love a lot of positive attention? Reward your puppy with plenty of treats, praise, and affection for good behavior when they’ve #nailedit. This will help them associate good behavior with positive outcomes.
  3. Be consistent. When we say, “Consistency is key,” we mean it. When training your new puppy, use the same words, tone of voice and rewards each time you train them. They’ll get used to it and begin to associate the right words with the right actions in no time.
  4. Keep it short and fun. Puppies have short attention spans, so keep training sessions to 10-15 minutes and make them fun. This will help your pup enjoy and look forward to learning.
Pro Tip: take breaks and have some toys ready for playtime. A tug toy or ball for fetching are great options that allow your dog to burn through all that puppy excitement before it’s time to focus again. Even puppies need to recoup when learning something new - just like that time you decided to take up knitting. Who knew crafting for hours could cause wrist burnout?!
  5. Be patient. Puppies take time to learn, so don't get discouraged if they don't get it right away. Stay patient and positive, and they’ll eventually learn what you expect of them.
  6. Practice every day. You know it - practice makes perfect! Make training a daily routine, just like your yoga practice or gym schedule. It will help their active and growing brains adapt to new commands, reinforce good behaviors and help your pup learn faster.

Training your puppy is an ongoing process that requires patience, consistency, and plenty of positive reinforcement. Keep it fun and be sure to celebrate your pup's successes along the way.

New puppies need a lot of nutrition and exercise to help support their growing muscles. A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber is a great place to start them on the right track.

Puppy Food That Nourishes Their Growth

Did you know some puppies continue growing up to 24 months?! And in the first 12 months, they can grow to 80-100% of their full size. Because their little bodies are working so hard to build all those muscles and strong bones in their first year, your wiggly fur ball requires a balanced and nutritious diet to support all their puppy parts and keep them strong.

When considering a diet for your new family member, a great place to begin is our Healthy Start Pack for small or large-breed puppies. Our bundles will get your pint-sized (or gallon-sized!) pooch off on the right paw towards a happy, healthy life.

Everything you need for a new puppy is in these packs! Each kit includes a:

  • Bag of puppy food, for small or large breeds: Many of our pet foods, including our Small & Medium Puppy Food, are made with Firmtastic - a proprietary fiber blend that makes their poops easier to pick up and less smelly. This is something you’ll really appreciate since house training is #1 on your New Puppy To-Do List. Our food systems are designed to work together for a holistically formulated diet tailored to your puppy’s specific needs. Bonus: it helps improve their digestion and is easy to transition!
  • Wellness Food Supplement: This supplement is the perfect complement to your pup’s daily diet. It’s made from a broad array of probiotics and naturally nutritious ingredients like chicken liver, cranberries, carrots and eggs - real food that helps maintain your new puppy’s overall skin, coat, heart, and immune health.
  • Variety of treats: For training time or any time! Pork & Apple Sausages, Tasty Rewards, and Water Buffalo Bully Sticks are made from wholesome proteins with crave-able flavors that will have your puppy doing the happy dance every time you open the pouch.
  • Specialty pet care products: Treat your pup to a little pampering to help ease the transition to their new environment with our Ear Care Formula, Revitalizing Shampoo, and aromatherapy Bath Fresh Mist. There’s nothing like that new puppy smell!

Ultimately, you’ll want to consult with your vet to determine the right plan for your pup's breed, size, and age. But as a new parent, you should stick to a regular feeding schedule and measure out portions to avoid overfeeding. (Keep in mind: our serving portions are a little different because our foods are more nutrient dense.)

Puppy Behaviors: The Good, The Bad, and The Paw-some

Puppies are known for their playful and curious nature. It’s what we love about them most! But they can show some less desirable behaviors that will make you want to pull your hair out some days.

Here are some things you can expect and how to encourage better behaviors:

  • Chewing: Puppies explore the world with their mouths. just like toddlers but without the diapers. So be ready for them to chew on anything they can sink their teeth into, including your favorite bag or furniture. Provide appropriate chew toys and redirect their focus to discourage chewing on forbidden items and save yourself from having to buy a new pair of leather shoes.
  • Housetraining: Accidents are bound to happen during the housetraining process - remember they’re trying to adjust to this new experience too. This is where that patience and consistency thing comes in again. Try establishing a simple routine where you take your pup outside frequently and reward them for going in the right place.
  • Socialization: Early socialization is crucial for your pup's development. Regularly introduce them to new people, pets, and environments to help them become well-adjusted and confident dogs. Puppy socialization classes can be fun and beneficial - think of it like a garden party for dogs!
  • Sleepless nights: If you have children, this one is no stranger to you. The same can be said for being a new pet parent. Prepare for interrupted sleep during the first few weeks. Puppies need time to adjust to their new surroundings and may cry or whine at night (we know, the howls are so painful). If this occurs, of course, go ahead and comfort your pup, but also establish a bedtime routine to help them settle in and sleep through the night without issue.
  • Unconditional love: In spite of the challenges, the love and bond you will form with your new puppy are unmatched. The joy, laughter, and unconditional love they bring into your life will make it all worthwhile!

Paws for Laughter

From adorable zoomies to the constant curiosity about everyday objects, puppies can be a source of endless entertainment. Will they ever get tired of chasing squirrels? (From our experience, that’s a “no” - and we like it that way!) You might find yourself in a puppy-proofing frenzy to keep your puppy safe, or chasing after your pup as they gleefully play keep-away with your socks. But these precious moments will create lasting memories.

Above all, remember to be patient, consistent, and positive in your training approach while providing a nourishing, balanced diet - and be prepared for both good and bad behaviors. Embrace the funny moments, and cherish the unconditional love and companionship that your new fur baby will bring into your life.

There’s More to Your Pet’s Food Than Just The Label

girl drying a cat

When shopping for pet food, comparing labels can be tempting. But recent FDA recalls are showing that there’s more to pet food than just the label.

It’s not easy being an educated consumer these days, given the huge variety of products out there. Naturally, you want to educate yourself before feeling confident about the ones you’ll bring into your home and entrust your family to. So it makes perfect sense that consumers look to measures right in front of them, printed in black and white on a label, to try to make an educated decision.

But - it’s time to change the thinking on product comparisons.

The Latest on Recent FDA Violations and Pet Food

You’ve heard it from us before: building trust with a company goes beyond reading labels and making side-by-side comparisons; it's about recognizing that a product's true value goes beyond its ingredient list.

Recent reporting of FDA violations demonstrates products, pet food in this case, don’t even have to be in the same category to make a comparison more revealing than a label line-up.

Earlier this year, a raw pet food company was cited by the FDA for violations including pathogen contamination. You’d be right to say that’s not unusual - raw foods are always in the news for contamination - but here’s where ingredient lists as a valid comparison get tossed out, because a company’s actions speak louder than their labels: One of the companies showed positive tests for pathogens in 49 products during August 2021 and August 2022, with a recall in July 2022.

The Wrong Way to Address an FDA Violation

So what did the company in question do to correct this and keep customers safe? Reportedly, nothing.

Read that again - a pet food company tested for pathogens, the tests were repeatedly positive for Listeria monocytogenes or Salmonella spp., and they continued production without fixing the problem.

The company was aware its safety program didn't work, but it failed to recognize this as a threat to customer safety and didn't adequately address it. This resulted in at least one contaminated batch being sold, which later tested positive by the FDA and triggered a recall.

How’d it get to that point? The FDA uncovered the company’s documentation, which proved the step they used to prevent these pathogens wasn’t effective. Even after the 2022 recall and reporting “corrective measures”, pathogens were still turning up in the company’s products, according to the FDA warning.

Does that shift your perception of just focusing on what you can read on a label?

Our take is that the emphasis on pet food labels alone isn’t enough, and this recent report drives that home. While this company seemed to have healthy ingredients, their behind-the-scenes actions and emergency response was simply inadequate, resulting in the compromised health and safety of their customers.

Staying informed as a pet parent requires more than reading labels. You also need to understand the recall practices and processes each company uses to keep your pets healthy.

Ensure Your Pet’s Health and Safety with Life’s Abundance

Making products that are safe and effective is Hard, with a capital H. It’s expensive and can span years in development, so it takes commitment, rigor and energy. There are plenty of shortcuts that can be taken at every step, and it’s easy to see how a company motivated by profit can be tempted in this direction.

At Life’s Abundance, when it comes to helping pet parents understand what they’re getting in every bag of food and treats, we do things differently. Our decisions are purpose-driven. Because our employee-owners are not only invested in the future of our products and the company, but also the health and happiness of your family, you get an unmatched level of transparency of what’s going into our products.

As a Certified Evergreen company, we plan for the future (100+ years out!) and this commitment to long-term goals includes the highest standards for safety and quality - not just making a quick buck. Our recall system is quick, efficient, and effective. While we haven’t had to use it before, and hope to never put it into action, safety is our #1 priority. That’s why we have this backup in place.

In the end, when you receive a package from us, you’re getting an unmatched product. And while our labels show this, we take extra steps to ensure your pet’s safety. Knowing who your pet's food comes from is so important - almost as important as giving your pet the extra love and attention they deserve every day!

Revitalize Your Pet’s Coat with These Spring Grooming Tips

Spring cleaning applies to your pets too! With an eco-friendly pet shampoo, get your furry friends fresh and clean after their playtime outside.

Welcoming the warmer months doesn’t just mean “out with the old and in with the new” spring cleaning - it also means sprucing up your pet! Since April showers bring May flowers, your family is spending more time outside, and all the lovely things about being outdoors are likely making their way indoors. We’re talking about dirt, mud, and leaves - the enemies of a clean home.

Don’t get us wrong. It’s cute to watch your pets having fun outside, and then post it to Instagram, but when muddy paw prints are everywhere, the cuteness ends there. Even cats who normally pride themselves on staying clean can make a mess of your bed, couch, or countertops after being outside.

We know you can’t stop spring storms from happening, and your pets definitely benefit from exercise and playtime outside. However, you can help your pets keep fresh with some simple spring grooming using an eco-friendly pet shampoo at home.

To get that groomer-level of clean and keep your pet’s fur soft and shiny, we’re sharing tips to revitalize their coat and freshen things up - all from the comfort of your own home.

Choose the Right Pet Shampoo for Grooming

So you’ve decided to take some time out of your day to give your pup or kitty a quality wash, which may include other activities like brushing and trimming nails. Before you start, first things first: don’t stress. Animals pick up on that and can react negatively to the whole process if you’re feeling anxious about it.

You don’t need to set up an elaborate home spa for your pets (but you can if you want to make it special for your furry king or queen). But your dog or cat doesn’t need a bunch of fancy pet products to get clean after a romp in the yard. You can get creative at home, too. Invest in some fancy sponges or scented oils to make the whole process more fun and still get great results.

Next, choose the right kind of pet shampoo. Stay away from pet shampoos filled with questionable chemicals since these might irritate your pets’ skin. Also, some of these shampoos mask odors rather than eliminate them.

Instead, go with an eco-friendly pet shampoo made with real ingredients, like coconut oil and rosemary. Botanical-based pet shampoos naturally neutralize odors. They’re also the safest way to remove dirt and other debris from your pets’ coats.

Using this kind of pet shampoo gives your pets a silky, healthy coat, no matter how dirty they get. And with nature-inspired products, you can rest assured that it’s not causing harm to your sweet, furry friend - or the planet for that matter.

Use an eco-friendly pet shampoo with botanical infusions of organic rosemary and sage to soothe your cat’s skin with a gentle, aromatic experience.

How to Clean Your Pets with an Eco-Friendly Pet Shampoo

Using eco-friendly pet shampoos is easy. Get your bath area ready with all of your supplies nearby. Soak your pet’s coat with a sprayer. If you don’t have a sprayer, use a pitcher to pour water over your pet. Then apply the shampoo and gently massage it into their coat, ensuring you’re getting the foam down onto their skin. Remember: be gentle and make sure you don’t get any shampoo near their eyes.

Next, rinse your pet really well so there’s no residue left behind. Have big towels handy to wipe down your pets after their bath and keep them warm. Once their fur dries, their coat should look and smell its best - and now they’re ready for some snuggle time on the couch!

Keep Your Pets Fresh and Clean Every Season

Overbathing (more than two times a month) can dry out your pet’s skin. So how can you keep their coats in tip-top shape in between baths? Try using a conditioning spray mist made with natural ingredients. A convenient pet spray like this is great for freshening up anytime - after playing outside, during brushing sessions, or whenever you need added softness and a fragrant boost. With this eco-friendly pet spray, you can keep ‘em clean without having to hit the tub every day.

In the end, any season is the right season to make sure your dog or cat gets the best care. And with an eco-friendly pet shampoo or conditioning spray mist, you’ll have the keys to an inviting, happy, and fresh-smelling home year ‘round.

5 Tips to Clear the Air When Your Pet Has Gas

people and pets on couch

Living with a gassy pet can be annoying, but a fiber-rich diet can help alleviate the symptoms of repeated gassy outbursts.

Let's face it - there's nothing worse than being stuck in a room with a constantly gassy dog or cat. Those noxious odors and a symphony of unpleasant sounds are enough to make even the strongest among us wilt like a daisy.

But fear not! You can reclaim your home from and get back to living your best-smelling life. You’ll feel confident inviting your friends over for game night, once you know what causes gas in pets and how to resolve it. You’ll never have to worry about your pet clearing out the room ever again.

We're here to support you in the fight against pet poots with some tips and tricks to curb gas in pets. So, grab your air freshener and let's dive in!

Causes for Gas in Dogs or Cats

Just like you, cats and dogs passing gas is a normal biological process. But their toots are 1,000 times harder to tolerate because cats and dogs don’t really care if it’s socially acceptable. They’ll let it fly whenever the feeling is right, regardless of who is visiting or where their stinky bombs land.

So what causes your cat or dog to have gas? Two common culprits for gas in pets are (1) guzzling down large meals too fast or (2) a sudden change in diet - both result in poor digestion.

When your cat or dog eats too quickly, they swallow extra air with their food. And if it isn’t burped out, the gas will find an exit path on the other end. Gas always finds a way out! Also, without proper transitioning from one food to another, the bacteria in your pet’s stomach will have a harder time adjusting to a new diet.

While these are more benign causes for gas in dogs and cats, sudden or repeated episodes of flatulence may indicate something is out of whack with your furry friend. You can avoid this from the start by adding a premium, fiber-rich cat food or dog food to your pet’s diet.

Other causes of gas in pets include:

  • Irritable bowel disease (IBD)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Parasitic infection
  • Food allergies
  • Inadequate production of digestive enzymes

If you know your pet eats at a normal pace and you haven’t made any recent changes to their diet, it’s wise to ring up your vet for a checkup. A professional doc will know if there’s a more serious, underlying condition that’s causing those gaseous releases in your home.

Tips for Dealing with Gas in Pets

Even if your pet suffers from one of the ailments above, there are some proactive things you can do as a caring pet parent to clear up these smelly issues that plague your pet - and ultimately your nose! Below are our professional tips for putting an end to these airborne attacks:

  1. The first place to start is their diet. Poorly cooked and highly processed foods cause more hydrogen sulfide in the digestive system (the gas that smells like rotten eggs). Feeding your cat or dog a premium diet featuring optimally balanced amounts of fiber will make a world of difference when it comes to reducing the production of hydrogen sulfide. A high-quality food also has nutrients which are easy-to-digest and absorb, and helps overall digestion.
  2. Try feeding several smaller meals, split between morning, afternoon and evening, rather than just one large meal. Little bites will help your pet adjust to a new food and also give their tummy time to digest properly.
  3. Avoid feeding foods that contain beans, milk and cheese, and canned foods containing carrageenan, a substance used to add texture to processed foods. This means table scraps! We know Fido loves a little bite of whatever you’re having, but if your pet is suffering from digestive problems, it’s best to keep the pizza and tacos to yourself.
  4. Slow your pet’s roll with a slow-feeder bowl. This popular solution puts a speed bump in your pet’s hungry chomps and regulates their pace of eating.
  5. Get outside and exercise more. A sedentary lifestyle increases the production of gasses and keeps gas stuck. Gas will naturally move out with some daily activity - and a nice walk is good for you, too! Plus, if your pet is going to pass gas, it’s better to do it in the open air. #fartiquette

If none of these help the problem, it’s time to consult with your vet. This is especially true if the problem is accompanied by diarrhea, vomiting or weight loss. Your vet has seen and smelled it all, and their experience will help your pet be happy and gas-free once again!

Fiber-Rich, Premium Pet Food Helps Deal with Gas in Pets

If there’s one thing that unites all pet owners, it’s poop. It’s unavoidable. That’s why we created Firmtastic - to make those daily bathroom breaks easier on your pet’s digestive system, and more tolerable for you. Our proprietary prebiotic and fiber blend in our dog foods and cat foods provides natural, fiber-rich ingredients to help your pet develop an overall healthier gut, resulting in better health you can see - right down to their poop.

The bottom line (no pun intended!) is when it comes to reducing gaseous pet odors and reclaiming your house as your own, there are a few minor changes you can make towards victory. From adding fiber-filled pet food to implementing a slow feeder bowl, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that gaseous outbursts are a thing of the past.

Planning a Trip? Don’t Miss These 5 Spring Break Boarding Tips for Pets

couple walking dogs

Finding a kennel or pet setter for Spring Break is your best bet to keep your pet safe and sound while you’re enjoying your time away.

It’s here! The first day of Spring, that time of year when the cold is officially behind you - barring any crazy lingering weather systems. Flowers are blooming and you’re dusting off your luggage in preparation for Spring Break. For us humans, this can mean fun in the sun and savoring the longer days of Spring. But if you’re a pet parent it also means time away from your four-legged family members.

As much as you consider your dog or cat a part of the family that should be with you all the time, it can be hard to find pet-friendly stays during peak travel times. The worst part is the lingering feeling of guilt that comes with saying goodbye for more than a couple of days. Your trip turns into thoughts of what your pet is up to, and if they’re missing you as much as you miss them.

This is when you need a paw-some kennel or purr-fessional sitter. Boarding your pets has a lot of benefits, especially the peace of mind you have knowing they’re getting pampered, plenty of playtime, and all the attention they deserve.

Below, are five tips that will help you and your furry best friend both have a safe, enjoyable, and guilt-free Spring Break. With the help of professionals, yes - you can savor that sunset walk on the beach knowing your cat or dog is having their very own, totally paw-some vacation, too!

Life’s Abundance pet foods are immune-supporting and help your pet’s digestion - both good things when you’re prepping them for a vacation of their own.

5 Tips for Spring Break Boarding for Pets

Whether you’re looking at kennels or a pet sitter, these things apply to any situation when it comes to boarding your pet for Spring Break.

  1. Don’t paws on booking early.
There’s nothing more frustrating than finding a good hotel and thinking “Great, I found it. I’ll book it next week when I have more time,” - only to find that next week, it’s completely booked up. The same can happen for good kennels and sitters. So once you have your dates confirmed, make a reservation for your pet ASAP. The best kennels and sitters fill up quickly, especially during holidays.
  2. Update your pet’s vaccination records.
After 2020, you’ve probably had your fill of vaccination talk, but this tip is important. It’s common for kennels to require additional vaccines or shots before your pet can stay with them. And sitters want to be assured they’re not staying with a rabid pet (that could end in a lawsuit!). Ask your kennel if there are any new requirements for your pet to safely stay with them and give them your pet’s most up-to-date vaccination records from your vet.
  3. Clearly mark your pet’s medications.
It can be hard to remember to take your own medications and supplements, let alone remembering your pet’s meds (there’s an app for that, btw!). So if your pet needs meds while you’re gone, make sure there is enough to cover your trip dates. You also want to clearly mark them with dosing instructions and your vet’s info in case of any emergencies.
  4. Prep with an immune-supportive diet.
Ok, let’s get real - tummy-related issues from traveling are no fun #MontezumasRevenge. The disruption in schedules, trying new foods, and dehydration are all culprits resulting in longer than usual bathroom visits while on vacation. And pets can experience this, too! To remedy potential problems, start feeding your pet a wholesome, fiber-rich diet for cats or dogs a few weeks before your trip. This will help their digestion and keep things regular while you’re gone - and your pet sitters will thank you!
  5. Pack enough foods and treats.
When we’re on vacation we tend to overinduldge on our favorite treats so it only seems fair to allow your pets to induldge a bit as well. So make sure you pack plenty of food and treats for your pet’s entire stay, plus a few extra days if your travel plans are delayed (or you decide you need an extra day to decompress in Cancun). Spoil your pet even while you’re away with a nutritious treat that has an irresistible flavor.

It also doesn’t hurt to leave a detailed letter for whoever is watching over your pet during this time, so they know exactly what their needs are and can reach you for any questions or concerns. If you take the time to follow these tips and plan ahead, your pet will feel more secure even when you’re not right there with them.

Most importantly – you can enjoy your Spring Break knowing that your beloved pet is in good hands. After all this hard work, it should be nothing but fun times once you reach your final destination, wherever that may be this Spring!

5 Powerful Benefits For Pets From One, Amazing Grain

bowl of brown rice

Brown rice has been around for thousands of years and is now a popular ingredient in healthy cat and dog foods.

Brown rice has gotten a bad rap in recent years - and we won’t stand for people picking on our little, grainy friend anymore! We’re here to set the record straight on this superfood and how it can benefit your pets. Brown rice provides plenty of research-backed benefits and, when included in your cat food or dog food, is a healthy source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

But there’s some concern among pet owners and vets about certain grains in pet foods. And really, it’s no surprise - it’s common knowledge that low-quality grains can be used as cheap filler. It’s possible to skimp on quality just to add bulk to recipes - unhealthy bulk.

So let’s be fair in setting this record straight…there are valid concerns with some types of grains, but brown rice can be a strong player in your pet’s daily diet and overall health. In this article, you’ll learn about the more problematic grains in pet foods and why brown rice is the ultimate winner in the grain game!

Corn, Wheat, and The Problems They Cause for Pets

Corn and wheat are two grains pet parents steer away from. Some people claim the issue with these all-too-common ingredients is their lower nutritional value compared to other ingredients, like protein - but that’s not the whole grain truth.

The main problem with highly-processed corn and wheat is they simply aren’t made to satisfy a primal meat eater. (Sorry, we don’t make the rules of nature - we just live by ‘em.)

And in some cases, a dog’s system will reject corn or wheat, and your pet may develop an allergy to them. Due to the reaction, their stomach can become irritated and digestive problems can arise.[1] In short, corn and wheat may cause a stinky mess to clean up.

Of even greater concern, corn made headlines in 2020 and 2021 for being the culprit in multiple recalls of kibble with health-threatening levels of mold.[2] This mold is so common it even has a name–aflatoxin, for all of you science nerds out there–so it’s understandable why you’d want to avoid feeding corn to your dog or cat.

While at times there are reasons for choosing a grain-free food for your dog or cat, generally speaking, brown rice can still be an important part of your pet’s diet. Just like you, our furry friends need a well-rounded diet with high quality proteins, healthy fats, and carbohydrates. And one of the best carbs you can find in pet food is brown rice (no surprise there)!

lifes abundance dog food

Life’s Abundance Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Dog Food is made with robust proteins and high-quality brown rice for a hearty meal that supports overall health.

5 Benefits of Brown Rice for Dogs and Cats

Brown rice is a whole grain rice. That means it has the bran and the germ still attached. These fiber-rich and nutrient-packed parts of brown rice make it the better grain choice in your pet’s food.

Brown rice is considered more nutritious than white rice - or corn for that matter! And here are five reasons why:

  • It’s a complex carb and complex carbs burn slower than simple carbs, supporting your pet’s blood sugar levels for longer periods of time.
  • It contains seven minerals and five essential B vitamins, promoting heart health and metabolism.
  • It’s a natural source of fiber that aids digestion, maximizing nutrient absorption.
  • It keeps your pets feeling fuller for longer, helping with weight management.
  • It’s full of calcium and iron, contributing to healthy teeth and bones.

At Life’s Abundance, we add high-quality brown rice to our dog foods and cat foods so your pet gets all of the benefits above - plus you get the assurance your pet is eating wholesome nutrition made just for them.

As an extra layer of safety–to make extra sure you’re getting only the good stuff–we routinely test for hazards like arsenic in our foods. It’s something we take pretty seriously because we want your pet to live a long, happy, and healthy life by your side, for many years to come!

Pet Supplements: Food For Thought

Dog being handed a supplement

Giving your pets enough vitamins and minerals is possible with the help of pet supplements.

No matter how healthy a diet we try to maintain, it’s a challenge to get the right amount of vitamins and nutrients to keep ourselves in tip-top shape - and the same is true for our pets.

Even if you’re feeding your dog or cat a wholesome food that provides complete nutrition, there are still health-related needs that simply can’t be addressed with food alone.

This is where pet supplements come in. In order to keep your pet healthy, happy, and chasing after the frisbee for years to come, it’s often times necessary to add vitamins or supplements to their regular diet. Below, we share four common pet health concerns that supplements can help with.

Skin and Coat Issues

Are you taking some sort of hair and skin supplement? Well, now pets can too! Many cats and dogs suffer from seasonal skin and coat sensitivities. Harsh, winter weather can cause your pet’s skin to become:

  • dry
  • red
  • itchy
  • irritated

In the summer months, pets are also prone to rashes or frequent scratching due to higher temperatures and humidity. Ultimately, your furry friend’s coat suffers, too. If you notice that your beloved pet’s fur is dull, ragged, or patchy, they may need a supplement to support healthier growth in order to restore their coat to its glory days.

When searching for a hair and skin pet supplement you’ll find that while most supplements have Vitamin E, a more complete mix of important vitamins like A, C, B, and zinc, are ideal like in our Skin & Coat Formula.

A complete pet supplement supports all the systems involved with keeping an amazing mane. The right formula not only supports good oil production, but also boosts collagen development and assists the chemical processes for maintaining healthy skin.

Immune Health Function

When your immune system is low, you’re likely to catch a cold or something more severe, like a virus. And your pet’s immune system is no different. When a cat or dog’s immune system is compromised, they’re more susceptible to sickness, too. Without a strong defense, they experience illnesses ranging from generalized inflammation to diabetes - and even cancer.

A nutritionally complete pet food is a good first step in boosting immunity, but you can go the extra mile with pet supplements. Supplements made with powerful antioxidants are integral to building up the strong immune response your pet needs when an infection comes knocking.

Our Wellness Food Supplement combines a dozen healthy foods rich in important vitamins and minerals (plus guaranteed probiotics) that support an immune system so it’s ready to combat any bacteria or virus - all in a convenient, chewable tablet! Think of it as your dog’s multivitamin and an easy addition to their healthy to-do list.

Joint Health and Aging

When you try getting out of your chair, are your joints making louder sounds than before? Well, you’re not alone because your older pets have a higher risk for joint pain, too. Additionally, there are some breeds more prone to arthritis and other painful musculoskeletal diseases.

That’s why it’s important to give your four-legged friend’s joints a little extra love, in the form of a pet supplement. When searching for an effective supplement for pet joint health, look for ingredients like:

  • Glucosamine
  • MSM
  • sea mussels
  • hyaluronic acid

Our Agility Formula includes all of these, plus a carefully selected combination of additional ingredients that support your pet’s entire musculoskeletal system. Getting up from their favorite spot on the couch will now be easier with the help of a pet supplement made to keep them zooming around freely and comfortably.

Daily Nutritional Support

Fish oil is probably known best for its brain benefits (thank you, Omega-3s!), but it’s a perfect supplement for daily nutritional support, too. The natural fats that come from fish oil are proven to support:

  • proper development of the eyes, brain, and reproductive cells
  • optimal immune and endocrine system functioning
  • heart health
  • better lung health

The problem with some fish oil pet supplements is that they don’t have an effective balance of the right oils. When looking for a capsule or liquid fish oil supplement, you want it to be the optimal formulation to ensure your pet is getting what they need from fish oil.

Our Fish Oil for Pets contains at least 30% EPA and DHA, the ideal concentration for your dog or cat’s overall wellness. You should also look for one in triglyceride form with no added flavors. This makes it easier to absorb in your pet’s stomach and the natural taste is a true pet-pleaser!

Calling All Pet Owners: Scooping Poop Just Got Easier

Our food is made with healthy fiber for improved digestion and elimination.

If there’s one thing that unites all pet owners, it’s poop. It’s unavoidable, and honestly, it can be downright gross. But simple changes to your pet’s diet can make this daily endeavor more tolerable. Feeding your furry friend a healthy dog food or healthy cat food with a focus on gut health is the first step in firming up your pet’s stool. At Life’s Abundance, we offer fiber-rich, premium pet food making messy pick-ups a thing of the past.

The Downside of Being a Pet Owner

  1. If you’re a dog or cat owner, you’ve no doubt been in one of these two situations:
You’re out walking your dog with plastic baggies in hand. And you’re hoping that whatever “present” your pet leaves behind is odorless, solid, and fits the one bag you brought. But how often are you hoping that’s the case? And it isn’t.

    OR

  2. You’re good about cleaning your home, but there’s one corner of the house that is never truly clean (through no fault of your own)–your cat’s litter box. It’s extra challenging when they leave behind runny or soft poop - and a deep clean isn’t something you have time for right now.

Sound familiar?

Cleaning up after your pets isn’t the most glamorous part of living with pets but, of course, it’s necessary–and you do it because you love them. We love pets too, and that’s why we make premium pet food for a nutritious diet. With the right ingredients, your dog or cat’s bathroom business will be healthier, easier to pass, and easier to manage when it comes time to clean up after them.

Dogs need a good source of fiber and regular exercise to optimize their potty breaks.

How can I make my pet’s poop healthy?

Life’s Abundance proprietary fiber blend, Firmtastic™, uses natural, plant-based ingredients, to promote good bacteria in your pet’s digestive tract.

Think of Firmtastic™ as your pet’s partner in the gut. With Firmtastic™ your pet receives nourishing ingredients that friendly bacteria love. In return, when the food reaches the digestive system, the happy bacteria help the body absorb and metabolize nutrients that would otherwise go to waste - literally.

Because the role fiber plays is so critical to your pet’s health, we’re adding this proprietary fiber blend to our treats, too. From meal time to snack time, your pet can enjoy consistent fiber intake (especially beneficial for our furry friends with sensitive stomachs).

Why is it important for my dog or cat to have a healthy gut?

Science shows the key to overall wellness starts in your pet’s stomach.[1] The gut is home to important bacteria that controls critical processes in your pet like:

  • Digestion
  • Immune health
  • Mood
  • Overall satisfaction

So the next time you dispose of your pet’s “special package” think about this - the poop you’re holding can actually tell you a lot about the quality of the food or treats your pet is consuming, and how their body is responding to them.

Think about it this way–if you had to choose between picking up a firm poop with little to no odor versus the alternative, which would you choose?

With the help of Firmtastic™ in our healthy dog food and healthy cat food, picking up after your pet will never be the same - in a good way. They’ll be healthier and you’ll be happier.

What Happens At Your Cat & Dog’s Teeth Cleaning?

little girl kissing a puppy on the nose

Maintaining your pet's dental health is key to a longer, healthier and happier life for them.

Dental care is just as important for our furry family members as it is for us. However, keeping your pet’s smile healthy and bright isn’t quite as simple as taking care of your own pearly whites.

Our four-legged friends don’t have the ability to clean their own teeth, and, as you’ve probably noticed, they don’t love you poking around in there either. Because pets can be prone to painful or even life-threatening dental disease, it’s important to consider setting up cat or dog teeth cleaning appointments with your vet.

How do pet dental cleanings work?

To clean a dog or cat’s teeth, they’re usually put under general anesthesia at the vet’s office or animal hospital. This is necessary both to keep the vet’s hands safe as they work inside your pet’s mouth, and to keep your best pal comfortable as the vet scrapes at and cleans the teeth both above and below the gum line.

While this may seem like a big procedure, it’s important to remove plaque and germs to avoid gingivitis, infected teeth, and other dental conditions that can become serious. Luckily, most cat and dog teeth cleanings are recommended only once per year. In between, you can take a proactive role in keeping their mouth healthy.

Home tooth brushing

You can most certainly brush your dog or cat’s teeth without employing general anesthesia to get the job done. There are several different sizes and styles of pet toothbrushes available on the market, and you can choose the one that makes the most sense for your family, based on the size and temperament of your favorite fluffball. From large toothbrushes with 360-degree heads and long handles, to brushing thimbles that fit on your finger, there’s something for every size and breed.

And don’t forget toothpaste! Far from the traditional mint flavor varieties that we humans, enjoy, dog and cat toothpaste comes in flavors such as cheddar, peanut butter and vanilla. Find a flavor your pet really loves, so that brushing time feels like a treat.

Treats that do the trick

Finally, you can trick your pet into cleaning their own teeth. How? With treats. There are many different types of treats that work to clean teeth and freshen breath.

Some treats, like our Porky Puffs, help to scrape food and plaque off of teeth as your dog chews on them. Plus, they’re safer and tastier than rawhide. Similarly, our Premium Cow Ears are gentle on tummies, while being tough on plaque.

Another dog favorite that gets the job done is our Water Buffalo Bully Sticks. Sold in a pack, these meaty, healthy sticks provide a satisfying chewing experience while maintaining your dog’s dental health by helping to reduce tartar.

Finally, sometimes you just need a treat specifically created with dental health in mind, like our Gourmet Dental Treats. With treats like these, your dog gets to eat something delicious (ours are honey and peanut butter flavored), and you get to rest easy knowing they’re providing your precious pooch with nutrients like calcium and phosphorus that are essential to bone and tooth health.

Our pets keep us smiling. The least we can do is take care of their smiles, so that they can stay happy and healthy for years to come.

Your Dog’s Treats Are Paws-itively Sustainable

At Life’s Abundance, we found a way to include our furry friends in on our sustainability mission.

When you’re shopping at the grocery store for your favorite cut of meat, you might see anything from prime rib and chuck roast to tenderloin or top round. It may seem like a lot of the animal is being utilized, but there are actually many body parts that Americans aren’t accustomed to eating and ultimately end up going to waste.

So, what’s to be done about it? At Life’s Abundance, sustainability is something we work hard on factoring into many of our processes so we found a way to include our furry friends in on our mission. We offer a variety of treats that use the body parts of an animal that would otherwise go to waste. In fact, one of our dog treat vendors previously owned a farm where animals were raised solely for human consumption. After realizing the amount of waste that was resulting in this, they started utilizing those extra parts for dog treats. This included pig snouts and cow ears - which might sound familiar if your pup is a fan of our Porky Puffs and Premium Cow Ears.

We offer a variety of treats that use the body parts of an animal that would otherwise go to waste.

Working with vendors like these have aligned our goals of prioritizing sustainability as well as providing the best for your pet. And let’s face it - dogs love pure meat, so single-ingredient treats like these are bound to be on their list of tail-wagging favorites.

Here are all of our single-ingredient treats that foster sustainability in this way and would otherwise be considered waste by other suppliers:

When you shop with Life’s Abundance, you’re not just providing high quality products to your family and furry friends’ for their wellbeing, you’re helping the planet. Sustainability has always been a huge part of our purpose so whether it’s installing solar panels at our headquarters, reducing waste in how we package your orders or getting the most out of the source ingredients we use for our dog treats - we’re always looking for ways to better our environment.
