All Bassets Cherished Basset Hound Rescue operates out of Rochester, NY and extends its rescue efforts to upstate, western, and central NY as well. ABCBHR also partners with eight breed-specific rescue organizations across the nation to further expand their rescue reach. This organization is dedicated to saving newly abandoned hounds, homeless hounds, and hounds from other rescue groups. ABCBHR’s life-saving mission is to “help homeless hounds get the care, love, and attention they need and find them forever homes that can provide for them.”

ABCBHR started in 2001 and has since adopted out almost 800 Basset Hounds to loving homes. Their goal is to rescue a minimum of 60-70 hounds per year, and this past year they were able to surpass their goal by rescuing 115 Basset hounds. Out of the impressive 115 hounds that they rescued, 108 pups found their way into forever homes.

All Bassets Cherished Basset Hound Rescue does not operate as a shelter; rather, they are a network of foster homes. The pups can remain in foster care anywhere from two weeks to three months depending on their health condition and needs. We’re pleased to bring you news of another financial award given by our non-profit charity, this time to a small, inspirational group of rescuers headquartered in Ohio. A breed-specific rescue group, this organization places abandoned coonhounds with foster homes until appropriate adoptive families can be matched to these quintessentially American dogs.

 Aptly named, American Black & Tan Coonhound Rescue (ABTCR) is a not-for-profit association that’s been in continuous operation since May, 2004. In their many years of operation, ABTCR has helped to rescue and find forever homes for untold numbers of hounds, not just in Ohio but all over the country.

At any given time, this group provides essential daily care for dozens of Bloodhounds and Coonhounds, covering the costs of all veterinary expenses. They also pay for food costs on behalf of fosterers whenever possible. Achieving so much with so little, this is an excellent group of life savers – all of them deserving of a little extra financial assistance. More...

It gives us immense pleasure to bring you more good news from the Dr. Jane HealthyPetNet Foundation. This first-of-2013 post sings the praises of one of our 2012 recipients, the Ft. Lauderdale-based Paws South Florida Rescue. This dedicated animal-welfare group has made significant inroads towards ending the cycle of feline overpopulation in their local South Florida area.

Devoted to working with feral cat communities, PSFR is composed of a tight-knit group of volunteers who care for felines who live in the shadows. Their efforts go towards the feeding and maintainence of these wild cat groups. PSFR is committed to seeing that all of these forgotten felines are up-to-date on their vaccinations, as well as tested and treated for illness or injury.

These aid providers are skilled in TNR, a method where felines are trapped without injury, neutered or spayed, and then released so that they may return to their feral group. With the assistance of veterinarians affiliated with PSFR, feral cat communities are closely monitored and carefully managed according to guidelines established by Alley Cat Allies, a popular feline advocacy organization. Any adults and kittens determined to be good candidates for adoption live with one of PSFR’s fosterers until matched with a perfect forever home. PSFR believes this foster-care strategy offers real advantages to the adoptable feral cats. For most of us, the meal of the year is quickly fading from memory. While families, friends and neighbors gathered together last Thursday for Thanksgiving, others were slowly picking up the pieces of their lives after Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic storm on record. Pummeling the East Coast beginning on October 29th, the death toll of the 1,000-mile-wide superstorm is estimated to be 113 human lives. An all-volunteer organization, Save A Kitty is dedicated to saving the lives of homeless, abandoned and abused cats while simultaneously working to help prevent more unwanted births in Southern California. The U.S. is experiencing one of the worst droughts in its history. More than 1,000 counties, in states stretching from Florida to Oregon and even including Hawaii, have declared states of disaster. The drought has impacted farmlands, water reserves and has created conditions which are conducive to disaster, including wildfires like those which raged uncontrollably in Colorado in June and July. Even though the fires are now relatively under control or extinguished outright, a state of fear reigned just a few short weeks ago.

Near Colorado Springs, the Waldo Canyon Fire was a disaster of massive proportions, consuming several thousand acres of woodlands and driving residents and companion animals from their homes. Adding to the heartbreak, many dogs and cats were separated from their pet parents in the fiery maelstrom.

In times of great need, however, heroes arise to help save the day. That’s why it brings us such immense pleasure to relay the story of All Breed Rescue & Training, an animal rescue organization that took extraordinary measures to care for pets displaced by the Waldo Canyon Fire. More...

The noted aviator and writer Antoine de Sainte-Exupery once said, “In giving you are throwing a bridge across the chasm of your solitude”. In that sense, this month’s featured rescue organization has firmly established itself as a builder of bridges, connecting thousands of dogs and adoptive pet parents.

It’s our great honor to announce our financial award to Going Home Greyhounds, a non-profit that provides refuge, aid and care for retired racers. Based in Wexford, PA, this rescue has been in continuous operation since 1995 and their reach covers a 100-mile radius which encompasses Pittsburgh. Going Home Greyhounds (GHG) is guided by a board of five members who oversee the day-to-day operations of more than 70 volunteers. This massive team is responsible for a variety of duties, including transporting retired racers from track kennels, bathing newly retired dogs, fostering Greyhounds in their homes, doing meet-and-greets with people interested in adoption, participating in local parades and handling the details of fundraising events.
Every fosterer in their network commits significant time and energy to locating qualified and loving homes for these graceful creatures. Caretakers are actively involved in making sure the adoption process operates smoothly. As a “temporary parent”, they can provide valuable insights into the personalities and individual needs of every dog, helping to place the right Greyhound with the right family. More...
